Sustainable transition

The SNCF Group has always participated in the transformation of society, following or even inspiring developments: the creation of the TGV, the regionalization of TER, OUIGO or our future innovative trains like the TGV M or hydrogen-powered trains at TER.

We are proud to play this role of gas pedal with our 65,000 employees, at the forefront of every era. Climate change, the challenge we have been facing for the past two decades, is a global one: it concerns us all, and can only be tackled collectively.

Being the mode of transport that emits the least carbon gives us a responsibility: to take our full place in a low-carbon society by making the train the backbone of mobility. We're all working to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that cause it. If we have been transforming ourselves up to now, we now need to accelerate.

Recent events - COVID, the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis - have given rise to a profound awareness that is enabling us to accelerate our collective efforts on a number of fronts...

The train is the most responsible mode of transport. It's up to us to make this strength a reflex for everyone.

Christophe Fanichet, Chairman and CEO of SNCF Voyageurs

Everything is possible to reduce our energy footprint and emissions, or to improve our impact on our stakeholders. Energy sobriety is now at the heart of our strategy and is deployed on a daily basis, as with our drivers who, thanks to eco-driving, can reduce our traction energy consumption by up to 9%.

We have also decided to give CSR power to the local level, notably via the establishment of a financing fund enabling our establishments to undertake renovation and adaptation work to accelerate their ecological transition. From 5M°€ in 2022, we have doubled the amount in 2023, given the number of initiatives.

On the customer side, we continue to reaffirm, time and again, the train as THE low-carbon mobility solution par excellence, and are deploying a number of initiatives and offers to make it ever more accessible to all, in order to help achieve the objectives set out by France in its National Low-Carbon Strategy (SNBC). There's no greater mission than to offer people the power to get around while protecting the planet, and to reconcile ecological mobility with economic development, access to employment or healthcare, or even tourist appeal for local areas.
